Thurrock Council joins East of England partnership to support a tobacco-free future

2 February 2026

Thurrock Council is proud to be part of a major new regional initiative to reduce smoking and improve public health across the East of England, as part of the Let’s Be Clear tobacco control programme

The programme brings together 12 local authorities across the East of England in a shared commitment to tackling tobacco harm, reducing smoking rates and addressing health inequalities. By working collaboratively under the Let’s Be Clear brand, councils are pooling expertise, resources and campaign activity to deliver greater impact than could be achieved individually.

As part of this joint effort, campaign materials and public information screens across participating areas, including Thurrock, are being funded by Let’s Be Clear, ensuring consistent, high-profile messaging that supports residents to quit smoking and live healthier, smoke-free lives.

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and early death, placing a significant burden on individuals, families and the NHS. Rates of smoking are also disproportionately higher in more deprived communities, contributing to widening health inequalities. Through this programme, local authorities are working together to ensure evidence-based, accessible support reaches those who need it most.

The Let’s Be Clear partnership will focus initially on coordinated action to promote and strengthen local stop smoking services, making it easier for smokers to access the right support at the right time. Future work may also include tackling illicit tobacco and supporting national policy change to further reduce smoking rates.

Cllr Mark Hooper, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being and Social Housing said:

“We are pleased to be working with our partners across the East of England through the Let’s Be Clear programme. Smoking remains one of the biggest preventable causes of ill health in Thurrock, and by working collectively we can amplify our impact, reach more residents and ensure people get the support they need to quit. This partnership strengthens our commitment to improving health and reducing inequalities across our communities.”

In Thurrock, support to stop smoking is provided by the Thurrock Health Trainer Service, which offers free, confidential help to anyone who wants to quit. This includes one-to-one support, practical advice and access to proven quit aids.
