On Monday 19 January, Cllr Sue Shinnick, Mayor of Thurrock and Cllr Victoria Holloway, Cabinet Member for Place and Environment officially opened the brand-new Re-use Shop at Linford Household Waste and Recycling Centre, to help reduce waste and encourage reuse within the community.
The shop is a community space where residents can buy good quality, pre-loved items at low prices instead of these items ending up in landfill. Every year, thousands of usable items are thrown away simply because they’re no longer needed, and the council find tonnes load of good quality items in the skips at Linford Household Waste and Recycling Centre, and have now set up the Re-use Shop on site to reduce this waste.
The Re-Use Shop offers a wide range of pre-loved and new items, including small furniture, homeware and kitchen items, small electrical items, books, toys and DIY materials. All items are carefully checked to ensure they are safe and fit for re-use before being offered for sale.
Councillor Victoria Holloway, Cabinet Member for Place and the Environment said: “This new Re-use Shop is part of our commitment to reducing waste and is a fantastic example of how we can reduce waste while delivering real benefits for our community. By giving items a second life, we’re cutting landfill, lowering carbon emissions and offering affordable goods to residents at the same time.”
Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Sue Shinnick was the first customer at the Re-Use Shop on Monday.
Any money made from the items sold at the Re-use Shop will be reinvested back into paying for council services in the community.
The shop is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, it is not opened on weekends.
Payment is taken by card only.
