Thurrock Council seeks residents' views on changes to local government across Essex

16 July 2025

Thurrock Council launched its public engagement today (16 July), inviting residents and local stakeholders to share their views on the issues important to them as proposals to reshape local government across Essex progress.

This follows the government’s decision to reorganise local government across Essex, aiming to simplify the current system. Under these plans, the 15 existing councils, including Thurrock, will be replaced by a smaller number of larger authorities serving Greater Essex.

All councils in the county, including Thurrock, have committed to exploring this vision. An initial proposal was submitted to the Government in March 2025. Now, ahead of a more detailed submission due in September, Thurrock Council is seeking wider input from residents, communities and businesses across Thurrock.

Cllr Lynn Worrall, Leader of Thurrock Council said: “Any changes to local government must work for the people of Thurrock. That’s why it’s so important that as many residents as possible take part in this first stage of engagement. We want to understand what matters most to you—whether it’s transport, housing, financial stability, or something we haven’t considered yet. Your views will help shape our plans and ensure they reflect the priorities of the communities they affect. Please take a few minutes before Wednesday 27 August to complete our short survey.

“The Government has made it clear: change is coming. But before any final proposals are submitted this September, Thurrock Council is asking residents to complete a short survey and share what matters most—whether it’s better transport, more affordable housing, or stronger local decision-making.

"This is about more than just changing council boundaries – it’s about building a better and stronger future for Thurrock. We want a system that works for our communities, reflects our identity, and delivers real value for residents. If you care about where you live, now is the time to speak up.

“This is just the beginning. Thurrock Council will be hosting events and meetings across the borough in the coming weeks to ensure everyone has the opportunity to get involved and have their say. Please keep an eye out and join these important discussions, when and where you can”.
