The council’s funding comes from several sources:
Council Tax – this is paid by households in Thurrock. Our Council Tax rates remain the lowest of any council in Essex.
Business Rates – money collected from local businesses. Business Rates are a tax on commercial premises, such as shops and factories. Unlike Council Tax, we have very little say over how much businesses are asked to pay as the rates are set by Government. .
Fees and charges – money we collected from charges on public services such as parking, planning and licensing
Other income – this includes rents and income generated by some our Services, such as our Registers Service and the Thameside Theatre.
We also receive some money in form of Government grants and national funding allocations. Often these grants come with rules on how we must use them and what we spend the money on. For instance, they must be used for specific services, like Public Health, Schools, and Transport.
Because this money is ringfenced, i.e. it comes with conditions on how we must use it, the money received and money spent cancel each other out. This means it doesn't affect the council's overall budget.
