Mardyke Valley

The Mardyke Valley extends from Aveley to Orsett Fen with an area of 110 hectares following the route of the River Mardyke. The main source of the River Mardyke lies to the north of Thurrock, in Holden's Wood between Great Warley and Little Warley. There are other tributaries, including one flowing west from Langdon Hills and another flowing east from Upminster. It flows roughly 11 miles (18 km) from the source to the tideway of the Thames. There is a footpath and bridleway along the length of the Valley. Bordered by areas of woodland, this is an important wildlife corridor with pleasant views along a 7 mile walk. The Valley is owned by Essex and Suffolk Water at Davy Down, with the rest of the Valley being owned by Thurrock Council who lease the land to a local farmer who oversees the management of the land.
