Ghost Story Workshops and Guided Tours at Coalhouse Fort

Thursday 19 February 2026, 11:15am

As part of the Reanimating Coalhouse Fort programme, you can enjoy a family-friendly ghost story writing workshop on Thursday 19 February inside the fort’s historic gatehouse rooms. The sessions will be led by artist and writer Laura Trevail and each workshop will last approximately 1 hour.

Laura said: “This is an event where kids get to try to scare the grown-ups, tying in with the idea of the fort as a place of safety and protection.”

Please note: Unfortunately, the gatehouse rooms are currently not accessible to wheelchair users or visitors who cannot use stairs. Access is via the original Victorian staircase with uneven stone steps.

Guided Tours of Coalhouse Fort

Visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the fort with Kevin Diver, Coalhouse Fort’s Community Engagement Officer and former Thurrock Museum curator.

Tours will begin in the parade ground and mainly take place outdoors, exploring the exterior structure and key military features across the surrounding parkland, including:

  • Radar Tower
  • Quick Fire Gun Battery
  • Minefield Control Tower

Tours will follow hard pathways, include no steps, and last approximately 35 minutes.
