How often we cut grass, hedges and shrubs

Our maintenance programmes are listed below.

All mowing cycles are approximate and may vary due to weather and operational conditions.

Parks and open spaces maintenance

Our parks and open spaces maintenance programme includes:

  • cutting grass in parks and open spaces on a 15 working-day cycle
  • pruning hedges twice a year
  • thinning out shrubs between November and February

Highway maintenance

Our highway maintenance programme includes:

  • cutting grass verges in countryside areas a metre from the roadside 3 times a year
  • cutting grass verges on major routes to a 25 working-day cycle
  • cutting grass verges in residential areas to a 25 working-day cycle between April and October
  • pruning hedges and shrubs that cause line-of-sight and access problems between November and February

Council housing land maintenance

Our housing land maintenance programme includes:

  • cutting grass once a month in February and March
  • cutting grass every 15 working days from April to September
  • cutting grass once a month in October and November
  • not cutting grass in December and January
  • pruning hedges twice a year, in July and during the winter before March
  • thinning shrubs between November and February

Sports pitch grass cutting

Our sports pitch grass cutting programme includes:

  • cutting grass weekly during the summer
  • cutting grass when required during the winter

Cemetery and churchyard maintenance

Our cemeteries and churchyards maintenance programme includes:

  • cutting grass on a 20 working-day cycle between April and October and when needed at other times
  • pruning hedges twice a year
  • thinning out shrubs between November and February
