Thurrock pays its respects on Remembrance Day

Thurrock's community came together this past weekend to pay their respects on Remembrance Day.
A number of events at locations including Stanford-le-Hope, Grays, Orsett, Corringham, South Ockendon and Tilbury on Sunday 14 November saw residents pay their respects to those who lost their lives in conflict.
Cllr Rob Gledhill, Leader of Thurrock Council, said: "After the restrictions of lockdown this time last year, it was a privilege to see people come together safely to remember and pay our respects as a community.

Thurrock Council raises the flag for Armed Forces Day 2021

Thurrock Council commemorated Armed Forces Day today, Monday 21 June, with a special flag raising event.
Cllr Sue Shinnick, Mayor of Thurrock, and Cllr Rob Gledhill, Leader of the Council, joined Jackie Doyle-Price MP, Thurrock veterans, members of the Royal Air Force Association, Royal British Legion and Essex Police to raise the Armed Forces Flag outside the Civic Offices in Grays and pay tribute to those who serve.
Following an inspiring welcome speech by the Mayor and prayer reading by Reverend Darren Barlow, the flag was raised to the national anthem.

Painted poppies honour Thurrock fallen for Armistice Day

Special commemorative poppies have been painted near war memorials across Thurrock to mark the Remembrance period.
Thurrock Council and contractor Henderson and Taylor painted the poignant road and pavement markings for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day near local memorials including:

New Thurrock Victory Memorial leads VJ Day commemorations

14 August 2020
A new Thurrock Victory Memorial has been unveiled in Grays Town Park ahead of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on Saturday 15 August.
The final piece to be added – a slate plaque paying tribute to Thurrock's brave service men and women – now adorns the memorial. It was originally due be revealed on Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) but was deferred to VJ Day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thurrock flies the flag for Armed Forces Day

Thurrock Council flew the flag to commemorate Armed Forces Day today (Monday 22 June).
A private ceremony was held in line with current social distancing guidance, which saw the Armed Forces Flag raised outside the Civic Offices, Grays, by Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Terry Piccolo, for those who served our country in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Merchant Navy.
