Construction paves way to boost affordable homes

21 March 2023

Works continue to progress at a site in Loewen Road, Chadwell St Mary, which is being transformed into 4 affordable homes for Thurrock residents.

Thurrock Council appointed chartered building contractor, Marfleet and Blyth, in August 2022 to replace a single house with 4 new 3-bedroom homes, as it continues to help meet the affordable housing needs of the borough.

Demolition started in October last year. Works completed to date include the foundations and groundworks and installation of fencing to the rear boundary.

Roof construction and the superstructure – the portion of the building which is constructed above the ground level – is currently underway on all four plots. Internal works are expected to start soon.

Cllr Luke Spillman, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "I'm pleased that this project continues to press ahead, and we will soon be able to offer modern and sustainable family homes to four Thurrock households on our housing register.

"These homes will also be energy-efficient, incorporating renewable energy provision, which will be beneficial to our residents and reduce carbon emissions.

"Everyone should have access to a good quality home. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to unlock housing delivery and provide high-quality homes for our residents."

Jason Davey, Construction Manager for Marfleet and Blyth, said: "Marfleet and Blyth are delighted to be making good progress at the site at Loewen Road for Thurrock Council. The roofs are being installed on the first two plots and the construction team can begin to focus on the internal works and helping our client deliver quality, energy efficient local housing for the community.

"We are happy to be assisting the local community by providing a social value donation, especially given the proximity of one of the community centres to the development."

As part of their social value commitments, Marfleet and Blyth recently donated a supermarket voucher which was used at 4 Warm Spaces in Sheltered Housing complexes in Chadwell St Mary towards essentials such as hot drinks.

Construction at the site in Loewen Road is expected to conclude in late 2023.
