Party marks East Tilbury library's re-opening

Celebrate East Tilbury Hub and library at a special space-themed launch party and family day later this month.
On Saturday 31 August, children and adults can join library staff and the Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Terry Piccolo, at the newly-refurbished hub, library and Bata Heritage Centre from 10am to 3pm. This event marks the library's re-opening, which took place earlier this year on Tuesday 23 April.

Ambitious plans to keep libraries at the heart of our communities

Yesterday (Wednesday 12 December) Cabinet approved ambitious plans to grow and improve the borough's libraries and make sure they continue to be vital resources at the heart of Thurrock's communities.
Following a public consultation that took place earlier this year, a strategy has been produced which not only guarantees all 10 of Thurrock's libraries will remain open, but seeks to enhance and improve services by developing some library buildings into community hubs that will see libraries co-locate with other important services.

Tilbury residents sent Essex County Council library letter in error

Thurrock Council is reassuring residents that there are no plans to close any of the borough's libraries after around 1,600 members of Tilbury library were sent a letter or email asking them to take part in a consultation which potentially seeks to reduce the number of libraries in Essex.
An administrative error by Essex County Council has meant the letter or email has been sent to Tilbury Library members by mistake. Tilbury Library is owned and managed by Thurrock Council, however, and is not part of this consultation.

Planning permission granted for East Tilbury Library refurbishment

Planning Permission has been granted for the refurbishment of East Tilbury Library following a devastating fire that struck after a vehicle was driven into the library and set alight in January 2017. 
The refurbishment will bring a number of improvements including a new entrance and two new meetings rooms for community use. 
Thurrock Council has worked closely with volunteers from the Bata Heritage Centre, which was based in the library, on plans for the refurbishment to make sure the library meets the local community's needs. 

Recognising community-spirited Summer Reading Challenge volunteers

Thurrock Council has celebrated 35 young people who gave up their time to volunteer to help run this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
More than 3,000 children took part in this year's Mischief Makers-themed Summer Reading Challenge at libraries in Thurrock. The Summer Reading Challenge, which runs every year in libraries across the borough, is a national reading scheme aimed at encouraging children to read six books during the summer holidays to gain rewards, including stickers, certificates and even a medal.

Local author donates books to Thurrock libraries

Tilbury-born author, Lesley Jones has joined other local writers in donating copies of their works to Thurrock's libraries.
Cllr Deb Huelin, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for libraries, said: "Thurrock is full of talented people. Grays library's ‘Made in Thurrock' collection gathers together a range of local popular authors such as Russell Brand, Michelle Harrison and Virginia Heath.
"Recent books donated are Lesley Jones’ breath-taking 'Carnage' series, Dave Petrie’s children’s 'tail', 'The cat who flew', and Vicky Jones and Claire Hackney's 'Meet me at 10'."
