The current contract with Biffa Waste Services comes to an end next year. Recycling is one of the council’s key priorities, so it is important that the process is given enough time to ensure the best provider is chosen, to continue to provide a reliable, high-quality recycling service for our residents.
But you also have a part to play!
Before throwing anything away, think about how you could Reduce, Reuse or Recycle your waste. You can start off by buying less and using less packaging which will produce less waste. Small changes can make a big difference.
How do I recycle?
Recycling is simply putting the right materials in the right bin.
It might seem small but putting the wrong items in the wrong bin can contaminate your communities' entire batch of recycling. So, you can start off by buying less and using less packaging which will produce less waste.
But we’re all human and will have stuff to get rid of so here’s how:
Recyclable waste – such as paper, deodorant cans, food tins, drink cans and cartons, glass bottles and jars and more goes into your blue wheeled bin. If you live in a flat, these items go into your communal recycling bin.
Food waste – such as plate scrapings, meat (cooked and uncooked), vegetable peelings, eggshells, teabags and coffee grounds etc should go into your food caddy if you have one. If not, this goes into your general waste bin only.
Garden waste – such as grass cuttings, leaves, cut flowers all go into your brown wheeled bin, if you've subscribed to our garden waste collection service. Garden waste can also be composted at home or taken to the Linford Household Waste & Recycling Centre.
Garden waste must not go into your general waste or recycling bin.
Non-recyclable waste (general refuse) - such as pet waste, plastic bags and nappies all go into your green, grey or black wheeled bin or your communal general waste bin for flats. This should be the last bin to be used.
