Construction milestone gives pupils a glimpse of new school in Purfleet

Excited pupils got a closer look at the progress made with their new school in Purfleet as investment in new schools in Thurrock continues.
A group of students from Harris Academy Riverside, who are currently based at Harris Primary Academy Mayflower in Chafford Hundred while construction is completed, had the chance to check in on how the work is progressing at a topping out ceremony last week.

Green light to invest a further £6.9million for new school places

A further £6.9million investment in creating new school places in Thurrock has been agreed.
Together with its partners, Thurrock Council is investing more than £70million to create over 3,500 new school places across the borough in the coming years.
As part of that investment, the council's Cabinet last night agreed to spend a further £6.9million for the already-approved expansion of St Clere's School in Stanford-le-Hope and the creation of temporary classrooms ahead of the opening of the proposed new Orsett Heath Academy in Grays.

Plans to create 1,340 new school places in Thurrock are expected to take another significant step forward, with sites set to be confirmed for two new schools next week.
Thurrock Council works closely with the borough's schools, the Education Skills and Funding Agency (ESFA) and the Department for Education to ensure there are enough school places to meet demand.
Next Wednesday the council's cabinet is expected to give the green light for land in Grays to be released to the ESFA for two new free schools.

More classrooms for Thurrock pupils

£4.5million capital funding has enabled two schools to open new buildings that will increase school places in Thurrock by 420 and improve facilities in schools.
An additional form of entry, plus new facilities at Thameside Academy in Grays – part of the St Clere’s Trust – was opened on 28 April. The occasion was marked by ribbon-cutting and balloons being released by students.

Key Stage 2 results are in for 2017

Thurrock's provision Key Stage 2 results are in for 2017.
Portfolio Holder for Education and Health, Cllr James Halden, spoke last week, (Tuesday 4 July): "Although the figures are still interim, provisional and all subject to final checks, we are all pleased.
"Nationally, 61% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics in 2017 compared to 52% in 2016. In Thurrock we saw an improvement here from 51% in 2016 to 56% this year."
