Take a walk on the Fort’s wild side

The perfect way to discover the natural wonders and amazing history of the Coalhouse Fort is on one of our free guided walks.

The next walk at the fort and its park is on Wednesday, 19 August at 11am.

This free guided tour will cover the fascinating military history of the site as well as an exploration of the local wildlife.

Visitors know about Coalhouse Fort's historic significance but are often unaware of the nationally and internationally important habitats and wildlife that surround the site. It is home to rare bumble bees, butterflies, water voles, wading birds, reptiles and birds of prey.

The Ranger Service, working alongside the Reanimating Coalhouse Fort team and our volunteers assist in habitat management, including maintaining water levels within the ditch network to protect wildlife, and are working with Historic England on plans to restore the fort's eroding lower moat bank.

The recent dry weather has created challenges for local wetland habitats and species, requiring active management to protect the environment.

Cllr George Monk, Cabinet Member for Deregulation, Efficiency and Civic Pride said:

“Coalhouse Fort is important part of Thurrock's heritage, its identity and natural beauty. I would like to thank our rangers, volunteers and partners for their continued dedication to preserving and enhancing Coalhouse Fort, ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy the rich history and unique natural environment.”

Wednesday’s walk takes about an hour and a half and includes an opportunity to see inside the fort after the tour.

Our free walks take place every month and cover different aspects of the fort and park.

No need to book, just turn up and meet outside the fort gates, near the café.
