Help for those struggling with debt, and enforcement where needed

Thurrock Council has developed a new Fair Debt approach, alongside Citizens Advice and other external agencies. The new approach will make sure residents who are struggling to pay their debts to the council have the opportunity to get the help and support they need. It will also make sure those who can pay but habitually don't are taken to task.

New fund provides additional help for struggling households this winter

Thurrock Council has launched the Household Support Fund after the government allocated more than £1.2million to support vulnerable households across the borough.
The funding will provide essential support to households most in need this winter helping with bills and food as the country continues its recovery from the pandemic.

Next steps to help financially literacy following Fair Debt Summit

Thurrock Council is starting to expand plans to rollout lessons on budgeting and money management to pupils and adults entering their working lives, building on the work of the Fair Debt Summit.
Members of the Corporate Overview and Scrutiny Committee heard that after the pilot in 2019, the scheme has been forced to go on hold due to coronavirus, but plans are now being built on the initial successes to expand the scheme to more young people and adults through Thurrock Adult Community College.
