Cycling is a fantastic way to get active, boost your wellbeing and help the environment. Whether you’re completely new to cycling or looking to get more involved, there are plenty of opportunities to explore Thurrock on two wheels.

Cycle training for all ages

Thurrock Council offer a range of cycle training options to help residents learn to ride or improve their skills on the road:

  • Learn-to-ride sessions – one-to-one sessions for children aged five and over who cannot yet ride a pedal bike unaided
  • Adult training sessions – one-to-one cycling training with a qualified cycling instructor
  • Family training sessions – training designed to help families or groups learn to cycle safely together

Bikeability training in schools

‘Bikeability’ cycle training is offered to year six pupils in every primary school in Thurrock. It helps children develop practical cycling skills and confidence for riding on today’s roads. There are different levels of Bikeability training, from complete beginners to more experienced young riders.

Explore cycling routes in Thurrock

Thurrock has a range of beautiful routes for riders of all abilities. Pick up a free Thurrock Cycling map at your local library, or explore some of the other routes Thurrock has to offer.

Local cycling groups and clubs

Being part of a cycling group is a great way to stay motivated, have fun and meet new people. There are plenty of cycling groups and clubs for riders of all abilities, including:

Gateway Cycling – welcomes riders of all levels, offering social rides, fitness cycling, races and more. Members meet monthly for group rides while enjoying a stop for tea and cake.

Chafford Hundred Cycling Club – an inclusive club that is affiliated with Cycling UK. They offer regular weekly rides for all abilities of cyclist. Main group rides take place at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. There are also group rides for beginners at 7pm every Wednesday between the spring and autumn.
