Thurrock Council will not allow Ultra Low Emission Zone signs in the borough

28 July 2023

Thurrock Council has told Transport for London (TfL) it will not allow any signs for the extended London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) to be put up by TfL in the borough.

ULEZ is being extended to Havering and means that vehicles that do not meet the emissions standard will be charged £12.50 a day each time they drive into the zone.

Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Leader of Thurrock Council, said: "We are completely opposed to the expansion of ULEZ to our borders and I am bitterly disappointed that the high court has ruled that it is lawful. It will not only negatively impact residents with older vehicles that need to drive into the zone, we are very concerned that it will simply displace traffic from the zone directly into Thurrock as drivers avoid the fee.

"There is a scrappage scheme for those living in the zone to support them to buy newer cars. Our position is that this scrappage scheme should be extended to people who live in boroughs on the borders of the zone and will also be affected by its introduction.

"I have made our position clear to Transport for London that we oppose the introduction of ULEZ and will not allow signs for it be put up in Thurrock."
