Statement: Thurrock Council Chief Executive

Thurrock Council's Chief Executive, Lyn Carpenter, is currently taking a period of leave from the council. Ian Wake, Corporate Director of Adults, Housing and Health, will be acting Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service in her absence.
Interim arrangements will enable us to support and facilitate the work required in relation to government intervention and the best value inspection with Essex County Council as Commissioner.

Thurrock's sorrow on the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Thurrock Council shares the nation's feelings of sorrow and loss at the announcement of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr James Halden said: "I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the royal family on behalf of the whole Thurrock community at this difficult time.

St Clements Way re-opened and repair work taking place

Thurrock Council's Highways teams is working to repair St Clements Way, West Thurrock so it can fully re-open for traffic as quickly as possible after it had been damaged by protestors who tunnelled underneath it. In the meantime, St Clements Way is accessible to traffic with a contraflow system and temporary traffic lights in place.

Secondary school admissions open Thursday 1 September

The next round of applications for secondary school places in Thurrock opens on Thursday 1 September 2022.
Parents and carers of children who were born between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012 will be able to apply for a secondary school place from this date. The deadline for applications this year is 11.59pm on Monday 31 October.

Stoneness Road, West Thurrock, re-opens

Stoneness Road has re-opened this evening, Monday 29 August, following its closure with limited vehicle access, due to a police incident.
A spokesperson from Essex Police said: "Essex Police are continuing to work with partners to minimise disruption to the roads and keep the public safe. Following this week’s protests over 50 arrests have been made and these individuals remain under investigation.

Congratulations to students receiving GCSE results today

Thurrock students are celebrating as they receive their GCSE results today, Thursday 25 August.
Cllr Barry Johnson, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "This morning I visited Grays Convent and The Hathaway Academy with Cllr James Halden, Mayor of Thurrock. We met students receiving their GCSE results and it was wonderful to speak with young people about their grades and what their planned next steps and aspirations are.

Eco protestors cause significant disruption to waste collections

Thurrock Council has been forced to suspend garden waste collections for the rest of the week because of the actions of protestors who have forced the closure of one road and traffic restrictions on another near Thurrock Council's Oliver Close waste depot in West Thurrock. General waste and recycling collections will also be delayed as a result of the protests.

Youth Offending Service rated good by inspectors

A government inspection of Thurrock Council's Youth Offending Service has rated it as overall 'good' after inspectors found the service has outstanding leadership and does excellent work in assessing what intervention is required to help prevent young people from re-offending.
Of 13 judgements, 6 were rated 'outstanding', 4 as 'good' and 3 as 'requires improvement'. The report found that the service: "has firmly embedded a child-first culture at a strategic and operational level, but this does not detract from its focus on keeping other people safe."

Aveley Community Hub officially opens

22 August 2022
Today (Monday 22 August) saw Cllr Qaisar Abbas, Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, join The Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr James Halden and The Deputy Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Sue Little, to officially open the Aveley Community Hub.
Cllr Abbas, said: "Although Aveley Community Hub has been open for some time it was a lovely occasion to bring together residents, service providers and council officers in true community spirit today to celebrate this wonderful facility.
