Children's Summer Reading Challenge

Reading throughout the school holidays is important for children's development – and it's fun!

Summer Reading Challenge

Primary school children can sign-up for the national Summer Reading Challenge to have fun with reading over the summer holidays.

You can join at your local library to take part in person. The librarian will:

  • give you a collector folder, stickers and other special rewards
  • help you find books to read

The Summer Reading Challenge for 2023 was 'Ready, Set, Read!', which ended on 2 September 2023.

Summer Reading Challenge school shield

Our Summer Reading Challenge school shield is awarded to the school that has the most students finishing the challenge compared with the total number attending the school.

For a chance to have your school's name engraved on the shield, ask your friends to take part and complete the annual Summer Reading Challenge. Every school in Thurrock, whether big or small, has an equal chance to have its name put on the shield and keep it for the year.
