Traffic management

Traffic calming and speed humps

Traffic calming is used to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Types of traffic calming include:

  • speed humps
  • mini roundabouts
  • coloured surfacing
  • signing
  • chicanes

The decision to use traffic calming measures is based on information supplied by the police.

Roads, junctions and residential areas are ranked according to the number of personal injury accidents occurring within them. The areas that are ranked highest receive traffic calming first.

Speed humps are a very effective means of controlling vehicle speeds and have been used widely throughout the borough as a measure to decrease the numbers of personal injury accidents. They are also used in 20mph zones.
