The government is providing a £150 one-off energy bills rebate for households in bands A to D, registered for council tax at 1 April 2022, except where the property is empty or a second home. Council tax discounts
A full council tax bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home.
To check who counts as an adult for council tax, go to our page on discounts if you live with people who don't count as adults for council tax.
Single person discount
You get 25% off your bill if you count as an adult for council tax and live on your own.
You can apply for a single person discount by logging-in to My Account. You can create an account if you don't already have one.
You can use My Account to cancel your single person discount if your circumstances change.
Other council tax discounts
If eligible, you can apply for a:
- discount for disabled people
- discount if you live with people who don't count as adults for council tax – including apprentices, students and people with severe mental impairment
- discount for properties undergoing major alterations or repairs – a 50% discount for up to 1 year
- discount for an empty property – for up to 1 month only
Some properties may be fully exempt or charged a premium.
When to contact us
You should claim discounts when you first qualify.
If you get a discount, you must tell us straight away if your circumstances change.
