Extra-care housing - assisted living

Piggs Corner, Grays

We provide sheltered housing and extra-care housing at Piggs Corner in Grays.

Piggs Corner has 2 housing blocks:

  • extra-care block – 55 individual flats in a building that has connecting corridors and shared areas
  • sheltered housing block – 34 outside flats that open to the street or small shared entrance halls

All residents have their own front door. They have a secure tenancy with us, and are responsible for paying their own rent, council tax and utility bills.

All residents at Piggs Corner are welcome to use the shared communal areas. These include:

  • 2 communal lounges
  • a dining room
  • a kitchen
  • a laundry room
  • communal gardens

Residents can buy a hot lunchtime meal at the Piggs Corner from Mondays to Fridays. The café also gives residents the chance to meet for lunch and a chat.

A Sheltered Housing Officer is based on site and provides support with tenancy issues, such as rent and repairs. They also arrange daily activities for residents.

A concierge service is based at the front entrance to the extra-care block. This provides 24-hour security. All visitors and staff have to sign-in before they can enter the site.

Residents are provided with a 24-hour alarm call system in case of an emergency, such as a fall.

Our extra-care team is on-site 24 hours a day to provide help with personal care and support, as needed. This is assessed through our Adult Social Care service.

Within the extra-care block, 5 flats are reserved for those who need a temporary home for up to 12 weeks – for example, whilst waiting for extensive repairs to a property, or to provide respite care while their carer takes a break. Residents of these flats do not have a secure tenancy.

Eligibility

To be eligible for extra-care housing you must:

Applying for extra care

You must use our online housing application form to apply for sheltered housing or, if you are already one of our tenants, to transfer to sheltered housing. Go to applying for council housing.

For extra-care housing, a social care worker must complete an additional extra-care application form for you. They will then present the form at a meeting of our Extra Care Allocation Panel. The panel meets once every month.

You can ask to be sent an extra-care application form by contacting our Thurrock First service. Thurrock First can also give advice on any other care support you may need.
