Finding and choosing childcare

Registered childcare for school-age children

You can choose from a range of childcare options for school-age children. These are sometimes called 'out of school' clubs or ‘wraparound’ care. They usually provide childcare sessions for children aged from 6 years-old to 11 years-old.

These clubs must be registered with Ofsted if they offer childcare for more than 2 hours in a day.

In addition to the types of club below, some childminders and nurseries may also offer childcare to school-age children before school, after school and during the school holidays.

Breakfast clubs

Breakfast clubs provide childcare before the school day begins, usually between 8am and 9am during term time. They can operate either at a school or away from school premises, and by run by the school or independently. Parents and carers drop-off their children at the club and club staff take the children to school.

After school clubs

After school clubs offer childcare as soon as the school day ends, usually between 3pm and 6pm during term time. They can operate either at a school or away from school premises. Staff from the may pick-up the children from school, and parents and carers pick-up their children from the club.

Holiday schemes and clubs

Holiday schemes and clubs – sometimes called 'kids clubs' – offer childcare for school-aged children during the school holidays. They can operate either at a school or away from school premises, normally between 8am and 6pm.
