Neighbourhood planning

Overview

The law allows communities to shape new developments in their area by coming together to prepare a neighbourhood plan.

Local people can:

  • choose where they want new homes and businesses to be built
  • have a say on what they should look like and what infrastructure is needed

A neighbourhood plan must be in general conformity with planning policy for the area

Groups such as community forums lead in creating neighbourhood plans.

Plans must be:

  • examined independently
  • put to a referendum of local people for approval
