Reporting child abuse

What happens after you report child abuse

Someone will talk to you and take details.

Identifying the caller

The parent or carer will be told if the referrer is a professional person, like a doctor or a teacher.

If you want to give details about a child you are worried about and don't want to be identified, this will be respected.

The police

If is suspected a crime has been committed against a child, the police will be involved.

These will be specially trained police officers who do not wear police uniforms. They will jointly investigate any allegations with the social workers.

The law

By law, it is wrong to abuse or neglect a child or young person who is under the age of 18 years-old.

If a social worker is told that a child or young person might be being abused or neglected, they must investigate to find out if a child needs to be protected.
