Weight gain occurs when you regularly eat more calories than your body needs for its normal functions or for physical activity.

Risks of not having a healthy weight

More than 7 out of every 10 adults in Thurrock are overweight or obese – this is significantly higher than the average for England.

If you are obese, it means you have a higher risk of developing serious health problems, such as:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • type 2 diabetes
  • gallstones
  • breathing problems – sleep apnoea, asthma
  • certain cancers
  • psychological issues – stress, anxiety and depression

Childhood obesity is also a serious problem

Losing weight

Losing weight means eating fewer calories and burning more energy through physical activity.

Help is available for Thurrock residents whose weight puts them at higher risk of ill-health.
