The Minister of State for Local Government and Homelessness has responded to Thurrock Council Commissioners’ most recent report into the council’s improvement journey,

Thurrock Council has welcomed new Government funding that will help drive forward the next stage of devolution for Greater Essex.

The Government has confirmed £3 million of capacity funding over three years (£1m per year) to support Thurrock, Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea City Council with the legal and practical work associated with establishing a Mayoral Combined County Authority (MCCA) for Greater Essex.

Thurrock Council endorsed the creation of a new Mayoral authority for Greater Essex at its Cabinet meeting on 17 September - a landmark step that could see more powers, funding, and decisions made closer to the people of Thurrock and Greater Essex, which will bring significant benefits to local residents.

On Wednesday 6 August, residents joined an online webinar to learn more about the changes that are happening to councils in Greater Essex. Hosted by Councillor Lynn Worrall, Leader of Thurrock Council, and council officers, the session gave residents the chance to ask questions, raise concerns, and share their views on the future shape of local government in Greater Essex. 

Residents, local businesses and other stakeholders will have an opportunity to speak with Thurrock Council’s top team to learn more about what Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) will mean for the borough and ask any questions they may have.  

The council has set up two public question time events in August, the first online through a live video meeting and the second face-to-face/in-person at the Thameside Theatre. 

Thurrock Council’s Cabinet approved a new Annual Report of council performance at its meeting on Wednesday 22 July. The first such report produced in years, it sits alongside the new Corporate Plan as a suite of documents which improve transparency and challenge into the council’s work as it works hard to improve services to residents.

Today the Government published the latest report from Commissioners into the recent progress made by Thurrock Council as it navigates its recovery and improvement journey. In their fifth report to the Government, the team of independent commissioners appointed by Government note further substantive progress has been made and recognises the challenging landscape in which the council operates.

The fourth Commissioners’ report detailing Thurrock Council’s progress on its improvement and recovery journey has today been published by the Government.

Thurrock Council can confirm that proceedings have been issued in the High Court against Liam Kavanagh. We are advised not to say more at this stage but will provide further information when we are able to do so.
