Leader joins teams on anti-social behaviour patrol

Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill, joined members of the Housing Anti-social Behaviour Team and Environmental Enforcement officers as they patrolled known hot-spots on Wednesday 20 July.
Cllr Gledhill, who is also Cabinet member for Public Protection and Anti-social Behaviour, said: "The team regularly patrol areas that residents and our officers report to us as known trouble spots. I joined them on Wednesday as part of Anti-social Behaviour Awareness Week.

Ceremony blesses cemetery section for Nepalese Gurkha community

Representatives of different faiths have taken part in a private blessing as Thurrock Council takes steps to provide a dedicated section within West Thurrock Cemetery for the Nepalese Gurkha community.
On Friday 22 July, Cllr James Halden, Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Qaisar Abbas, Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, and Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet Member for Environment, were joined by Man Bahadur Rai, president of the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) (TNG) Community, and 40 of the TNG Community, including executive members and Gurkha veterans.

Consultation launch for Broxburn Drive development plans

Proposals to build new affordable council homes with wider landscaping improvements and natural play running through and around the existing environment in South Ockendon are being explored in a consultation launched today (Wednesday 20 July).
Thurrock Council is seeking your views on proposals for Broxburn Drive as it continues to help meet the affordable housing needs of people in the borough. The new proposals include building 33 new apartments ranging from 1-bedroom to 2-bedroom properties within 6 new buildings.

Strategy recognises vital link between housing and health

Leader praises police in tracking down car cruiser ringleader

Thurrock Council Leader, Cllr Rob Gledhill, has hailed as a huge success the work carried out by Essex Police, Thurrock Community Policing Team, in tracking down one of the organisers behind car cruiser meets in Thurrock.

Charges considered for abandoned shopping trolleys

Thurrock Council is set to initiate a process for formally adopting powers to charge owners of abandoned shopping trollies for their collection from public land.
If the scheme goes forward following a consultation with shops and other stakeholders, it will mean the council can start charging owners for the cost of collecting, storing and returning or disposing of trollies that have been dumped in roads, parks or on other public land in the borough.

Unhygienic butcher forced to pay out over £15,000

A butcher who was found keeping meat in unsafe and unsanitary conditions has been forced to pay out over £15,000 in fines and costs after appearing at Basildon Magistrates Court on Tuesday 12 July.
During a visit to Jones Meat Market, Derwent Parade, South Ockendon in July 2021, Thurrock Council Environmental Health Officers forced the owner to surrender food to protect public health after they found a number of serious food hygiene breaches. These included:

Works to cut bills and boost energy efficiency of tower blocks

Spades have hit the ground to kickstart an innovative project to upgrade the heating systems, make homes warmer and cut fuel bills in 3 council-owned tower blocks in Chadwell St Mary.
Old storage heaters and hot water systems will be replaced in each flat with ground source heat pumps. The project will dramatically enhance the blocks' energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and will help combat mould.

Community Environmental Development Fund to bring ideas to life

Residents and community organisations are once more invited to apply for the Thurrock Council's Community Environmental Development Fund (CEDF) to see their innovative ideas for the community come to life, as applications open this week.
Individuals and groups have until Sunday 18 September 2022 to apply for between £5,000 and £75,000 of CEDF grant funding towards community-led projects that are focused on delivering long-term benefits to residents and are accessible to all.

Education Awards 2022 winners announced

The winners of the Thurrock Education Awards 2022 were announced at a special ceremony on Friday 8 July.
Taking place at the Civic Hall, Grays, the amazing talents of colleagues across early years settings, schools and colleges in Thurrock were celebrated. The ceremony brought together finalists from across 11 award categories, as well as a special Director’s award.
