Options for school leavers with special needs

Other programmes

Examples of other programmes that can support schools leavers with special needs are listed below.

Next Steps employability programme

Next Steps employability programme is for 16 to 25 year-olds who are known to us as having been ‘Looked After' or a ‘Care Leaver'. It provides work experience for young people to boost their CV and help them compete for jobs and apprenticeships. Work experience placements are based on individual needs, where possible.

Before starting any placement, young people take part in an employability programme that helps them improve their confidence and skills to gain and maintain employment. The programme runs once a month with a group of no more than 6 learners.

Thurrock Autistic Community Together programme

Thurrock Autistic Community Together (TACT) is a 2-year programme provided by Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions. It supports those with complex autism or with challenging behaviours, for whom the only alternative would likely be a residential placement.

This programme helps those who take part by giving them greater independent skills, both at home and in the community, with a view to them eventually moving to supported living within their community.

It uses learning tools based on applied behaviour analysis to teach new skills, manage behaviours and improve quality of life.

LifeSkills programmes

LifeSkills helps create a brighter future for people by providing education programmes that enable learners to gain employment or move into further or higher education.

Their education and training programmes help young people over 16 years-old get the training, support, skills and confidence they need to progress into the world of employment.

A range of study programmes is offered at the LifeSkills Centre in Basildon.

TCHC GAPS programme

The TCHC GAPS programme helps young people get back into work, training or education. It offers individually tailored courses for 16 to 18 year-olds, or up to 24 years-old for those with an education, health and care (EHC) plan.

The programme works to improve basic maths, English and vocational qualifications. It gives young people the tools, confidence and a wide range 'soft' skills to progress in life and achieve their goals.
