Tilbury growth

Overview

Tilbury is currently home to around 13,000 people and is dominated by the Port of Tilbury.

A Tilbury development framework was published in October 2017.

Port of Tilbury

The Port of Tilbury handles significant levels of bulk cargo, including paper and grain as well as container cargo. It celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2011.

The port is already one of Thurrock's largest employers, and boasts high-tech berths and warehousing within its gates. The distribution centre site covers more than 850 acres in total.

The port wishes to develop further and create an estimated 4,000 jobs – go to Forth Ports: Port of Tilbury to find out more.

Town centre

The town centre and Civic Square has the potential to be redeveloped. Developments include:

  • residential
  • retail
  • commercial
  • community facilities, including a 'health hub' for Tilbury healthcare services

Employment

It is proposed that some land located to the north of Tilbury will be used for port-related employment. Building work is already underway, including creation of a new lorry park.

Riverside connections

The port expansion provides an opportunity to link Tilbury and the riverside with a green corridor. The public will be able to enjoy the river front for recreation, while improvements in transport links will provide access to the area. The area surrounding Tilbury Fort will be improved.
