Trading Standards for consumers

Internet scams

Some websites can look like they're part of an official government service or that they provide more help than they actually do.

This can mean you pay for services that you could get cheaper or for free if you used the official government service. Examples include:

  • ordering new passports
  • booking driving tests
  • renewing car tax discs

Don’t give out private information - such as bank details or passwords - or reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they’re genuine

Thurrock Council services are all linked from www.thurrock.gov.uk.

You can use the GOV.UK website to find all official government online services and information.

Report your concerns

You can report misleading websites, emails, phone calls or text messages you think may be suspicious.

Go to the GOV.UK page on how to avoid and report internet scams and 'phishing'.
