Independent support for children in care

Independent visitors

An independent visitor is someone who volunteers to spend some of their time acting as an adult friend to you. They are not social workers. If you live in a foster home or residential home and do not see your family often, you may be able to have an independent visitor.

An independent visitor is someone to:

  • visit you
  • talk to you
  • listen to you
  • share your interests and hobbies
  • help you if you have any worries
  • speak up for you
  • be a friend

An independent visitor is there to support you.

You can find out more about independent visitors by calling or emailing the Open Door: Young People Looked After (YPLA) team.
