Petitions to change our governance
Voters in Thurrock can petition us to hold a referendum on whether we should change the way the council is governed. For example, whether we have an elected mayor or a committee system.
For the referendum to go ahead, the petition would need to be signed by at least 5% of the people eligible to vote in Thurrock.
The number equal to 5% of the people eligible to vote is known as the 'verification number'.

From 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, any petition for changes to our governance must have at least this number of signatures for us to hold a referendum.
