Council tax support

Benefits – new online service

On Wednesday 9 December we changed to a new online system for housing benefits and council tax support. Our 'My Account' service for benefits is no longer used.

This change does not affect any applications you made before 9 December. We will contact you when we finish processing them. You don't need to contact us.

Your on-going housing benefit payments and council tax support are not affected by this change. You don't need to contact us.

Benefits – Wednesday 20 January

On Wednesday 20 January, from 6pm to 10pm, our online benefits service will not be available.

This is due to essential maintenance. Please do not try to use the service during this time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Local council tax support

Whether you own your own home or pay rent, you must pay council tax.

Find out about council tax and ways to pay council tax.

Households on low income can get council tax support, including those who receive:

  • income support
  • job seeker's allowance
  • employment support allowance
  • pension credit

Council tax support replaced council tax benefit in 2013 as part of the government's welfare reforms.

Claiming council tax support

If you think you may be entitled to council tax support you should complete a benefit claim. You should also read about proof you need to have and 'fast tracking' claims.
