Changes to bin collections

From Monday 8 April 2024 there are changes to bin collections across the borough.

What's changed

Service From Monday 8 April
Green/grey bins Collections every 2 weeks
Blue bins Collections every 2 weeks
Brown bins An optional service at a charge of £80 – collections every 2 weeks in the same weeks as blue bins, except when we pause for winter
Collection days Collection days have changed for fewer than 40 streets – we provided leaflets that show collection days and other information for households (download leaflets at the end of this page)
Collection weeks Your street is either a 'Round A' or a 'Round B' street – each week we'll collect blue and brown bins from one round and green/grey bins from the other round, then swap over the following week
Food waste Later this year all streets will get food waste collections every week – until then, food waste should go in your green/grey bin

These changes will help:

  • make sure our waste collection service is fit for the future
  • boost how much we all recycle across the borough

What's not changed

We've not changed:

  • your bins – you still have the same bins
  • what goes in each bin – check our A to Z of waste and recyclable items
  • the time we start collecting bins – bins should be ready for collection at 6am
  • the place we collect bins – leave your bins in the usual place
  • blue bin 'side waste' – read what goes in your bins for extra recycling we collect
  • help for residents who need it – we still offer assisted bin collections

Blue bin and green/grey bin collections

Blue bins are for dry recycling, green/grey bins are for waste that cannot be recycled. We will collect blue bins and green/grey bins every 2 weeks on alternate weeks.

We will not empty blue bins or green/grey bins if they contain the wrong types of waste. You can use our A to Z of waste and recyclable items to check what goes in each bin.

We will not empty blue bins or green/grey bins that contain any garden waste.

There is no charge for blue bin or green/grey bin collections.

Brown bin collections

From Monday 8 April 2024, we will empty your brown bin only if you have signed-up for our garden waste collection service and paid the annual subscription charge.

If you subscribe, we'll empty your brown bin on your collection day in the same weeks as your blue bin, except during our winter seasonal pause of up to 6 weeks. There will be no pause in 2024/25.

Collection days

All households will have one day of the week as their bin collection day. Your green/grey bin, blue bin and – if you sign-up – brown bin will all be emptied on the collection day for your household.

You can check your collection day by selecting the first letter of your street name, below:

Collection days may change around public holidays – go to normal collections and public holidays.

Collection weeks

Each week we will collect green/grey bins from one half of the borough, and blue bins and brown bins from the other half. Each half of the borough – called 'Round A' and 'Round B' – will get the same service, but with green/grey or blue and brown bin collections in different weeks.

Week by week, the bins we collect from your street will depend on whether it is part of 'Round A' or 'Round B'. You can check whether your street is 'Round A' or 'Round B' by selecting the first letter of your street name, below:

Food recycling bins

Later this year we'll be introducing new weekly food waste collections for all households across the borough. There will be no charge for this service. More details will be published nearer the time, when confirmed.
